Everyone should have an up to date will

Your will is an expression of your values, giving voice to the people and the causes most important to you. It’s about setting your intentions for the future and making sure your estate goes exactly where you want it to.

A gift in your will may be a:

• whole or share of your estate, or
• fixed amount, or
• residual amount after you have provided for family and loved ones.

When writing your will

When writing or updating your will, we encourage you to discuss the intentions of your will with those close to you, and to seek professional legal advice.

While there are a variety of possible clauses, the following is the one most used for a general gift:

Recommended Bequest Wording for Melbourne City Mission (MCM)

I give, devise and bequeath, free of all duties and taxes, ____________________________________ to Melbourne City Mission (ABN 56 161 846 149) of 164-180 Kings Way, South Melbourne VIC 3205 for its general purposes. I declare that the written receipt of the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer or any other authorised officer of Melbourne City Mission shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executor(s) or trustee(s), who shall not be bound to see to the application of the gift.

If, before my death, Melbourne City Mission has changed its name, amalgamated with another body or transferred its assets to a successor entity, this bequest shall apply to that successor or renamed body.

Insert one of the following in the blank line above:

• the whole of my estate
• ____ % of my estate
• the residue of my estate
• ____ % of the residue of my estate
• the sum of $____
• [description of specific asset, e.g. “my shares in XYZ Ltd”]
