MCM has been providing Support Coordinator Services in Bendigo and the West since January 2019. Rebecca is one of our wonderful Support Coordinators in Bendigo who has been with MCM since January 2020, and she speaks below on what it is like to be an MCM Support Coordinator.
The best part of my job is that I get to see all the positive things that the NDIS can do for our participants. It is an opportunity to be constantly learning something new and to connect with people.
A Support Coordinator is there to assist participants in accessing their NDIS Plan, and to support them in unlocking the full potential of what their NDIS plan can offer them. Support Coordinators also provide the right tools and information to participants so they can feel confident in what they would like to spend their funding on, and better understand the breakdown of their funding in a way that is relevant and easy to understand.
Being a Support Coordinator also involves connecting participants with the right services that allow them to reach their specific goals and outcomes. Support Coordinators are constantly building relationships and connections with local providers where they can share resources and work collaboratively to best support participants.
A usual day involves meeting with participants and their support network to discuss their goals, needs and talk through the services they would like to access. There is also checking in with the participants and service providers for feedback, following up on enquiries and research into new prospective providers. As a Support Coordinator in Bendigo, my participants are located across regional Victoria and it can be challenging to deliver access to support for their individual needs. I currently support 23 participants, ranging in age from 12 – 64 and they all have unique and complex needs.
As well as home visits I frequently connect with participants on the phone to support them through any situation that may arrive, and work with them to find a resolution. I spend time working on plan reviews, report writing, and following up with providers to receive outcome reports and ensure all the necessary documentation is up to date.
Our MCM Support Coordinators encourage participants to have more independence in how they manage their funding such as who they would like to work with and what services would be of greatest benefit. NDIS participants can exercise choice and control over their supports.
More significantly, our Support Coordinators provide clients with the required tools that enable them to reach their plan goals, to express themselves on an individual level, and engage with their community.
“I love seeing my participants reach their goals and their independence, which then allows them to participate within their community. I hope I can deliver something that allows participants to build their confidence and capacity and to achieve their goals.”
